GIRO 2020

The annual GIRO conference is always a highlight for us here at Marcuson Consulting.  With the conference being held virtually this year, it has been a great shame that we haven’t been able to reconnect with our fellow professionals in person. Even so, the sessions themselves continue to be extremely engaging, offering valuable insights into the hot topics of our extraordinary commercial environment today.

We are involved in two sessions in this year’s conference and wanted to let you know a bit more about them.  As both sessions are sponsored, they are free to attend for all IFoA members,  even after GIRO is over.

Panel Discussion on Reserving (Plenary Session)

Wednesday 11th November, 16:00

We are proud to be sponsoring this panel discussion which will be covering various aspects of reserving, including sharing experiences and thoughts on:

  • How to streamline reserving appropriately, striking the balance between commercial and technical considerations
  • Top tips for sense checking and top down review
  • Dealing with the impact of shocks – like COVID – on claims and premium data
  • Spotting trends early and then knowing what to do with them

The speakers for this session are: Seema Thaper (Enstar), Catherine Barton (Talbot Underwriting), Emma Stewart (Lloyd’s of London) and Helen Cooper (Hiscox).

The discussion promises to be both informative and interesting.

A Tale NOT Told by an Idiot: Effective Communication through Storytelling (Plenary Session)

Thursday 12th November, 14:00

Stories have been around as long as humanity, yet many actuaries shy away from the narrative form.  Why?  Are we convinced that there’s nothing dramatic about a reserve study? Can an actuary not play the hero?

This webinar, sponsored by the Casualty Actuarial Society, will be presented by Brian Fannin (CAS) and our own Alex Marcuson.  Join them on their epic quest from the 6th day to the present day, as they explore how monsters, magic and mystery can transform your reports from turgid rags to C-suite riches.

Both of these sessions are free to book online from the GIRO 2020 website and we look forward to seeing your comments!

If you want to continue the conversation with any of our Marcuson Consulting staff, please do not hesitate to contact us!
